Control is not achieved by limiting choice. It is achieved by assigning significance to the chooser. When the act of selection confers status, compliance no longer requires force. The system no longer needs to direct behavior. It only needs to define who is seen as choosing.

Systems do not preserve themselves by remaining intact. They preserve themselves by discarding what they cannot sustain. What is lost is often mistaken for weakness. It is the cost of survival. The advantage is not speed. It is the range of what a system is willing to sacrifice. And most systems collapse not because they cannot adapt, but because there are things they refuse to lose.
